The Prototype

  • The imaginary New York Southern Railway

  • A bridge line for Appalachian coal and Southeastern produce

  • Loosely based on select characteristics of NYO&W, NYC, Erie, N&W, et al.

  • The NYS is a well run, but economically marginal Class 1 railroad

Operation

  • Staging yards feed steady traffic through a division point yard

  • Steam engines are changed, diesel engines are serviced

  • Passenger set-outs, pickups and head-end servicing; freight set-outs for branch.

  • Through freights are coal drags, solid refer blocks and general merchandise.

Standards

  • Minimum 72" R curves with spiral easements on all visible track

  • Minimum #8 visible (#7.5 Atlas in staging) main line turnouts, #6 minimum on freight only trackage in yards

  • Maximum 1.5% grade, Minimum siding capacity 25 cars

  • Track plan designed for easy maintenance access
